Creativity is a word that may not always be associated with daily life, but it is a skill that can be used daily and nurtured and developed over time. If you feel stuck in a rut and struggle to create new ideas or solutions to problems, fostering creativity can help! Here are five methods to help induce that creativity you might be missing.

  • Meditation: a mental exercise that involves relaxation, focus, and awareness. Meditation has been practiced in cultures worldwide and has been increasing in popularity amongst those wishing to improve their overall wellness and psychological well-being. While several different forms of meditation can be practiced, concentration and mindfulness are the two main types. Concentration focuses on a specific thing while tuning out everything around you. Mindfulness can target different issues (depression, anxiety) but involves being aware of and involved, aware and accepting of your present moment.
  • Visual Stimuli: surround yourself with images or objects that have inspired you in the past or that you find currently inspirational. These can include photographs, artwork, and sentimental things that bring a sense of purpose into your life. Anything that brings a sense of happiness and passion can help break the creative barrier you may face.
  • Change Your Environment: Sometimes, we only need a change of scenery to spark that passion and creativity. Sometimes, embarking on an "idea walk" or simply leaving your current workspace and working in a different room in your home can all be beneficial in creative inspiration.
  • Mind Mapping: A visual way to brainstorm involves creating diagrams and graphic depictions of related ideas and concepts. Sometimes all it takes is seeing similar thoughts in one place to spark new ideas and new routes of thinking.
  • Reverse Thinking: Instead of thinking about what you want to create, try thinking about what you do not wish to make and see if this helps you develop new and innovative ideas.

These five strategies can be used to tap into your potential and generate fresh and creative ideas when you feel stuck in a rut. Embracing different techniques and experimenting with other solutions to the roadblocks you may face can serve you well in multiple areas of your life. Give it a try if you find yourself stuck-who knows what possibilities this may open for you!
